My fitness journey started as an emaciated 18-year college freshman from San Diego, CA who did not like his thin physique. I remember walking through the college gymnasium and into the weight room and being impressed by the sculpted bodies of the athletes working out in the college gym. My motivation to begin working out was to improve my self-confidence and build a ripped frame. I played basketball in high school and physical fitness consisted of running and lightweights in the high school gym. The weight room was not my cup of tea in high school. My freshman year of college was my introduction to strength training. I read fitness articles on the net, chatted up the school personal trainer, and developed a tribe of friends who were passionate about strength training. Electricity was running through my body upon entering the college gymnasium. The weekly workouts were mentally and physically taxing but the results made the hard work worthwhile. I continued to work out through my sophomore, junior and senior years of college. The gym not only allowed me to increase my strength in the weight room but provided an inner calmness for balancing an academic and social life. I am more passionate about working out twenty-two years later than when my fitness journey began. The sanctuary that working out provides for balancing professional and social life is priceless! Strength training during the pandemic is the gift that keeps on giving.
