I am writing to give an account of my physical and mental struggle to stay fit during the pandemic and provide a silver lining that fitness has given me. Working remotely and struggling to stay fit were common themes in the early innings of the pandemic. The additional challenge of earning my master’s in health care and working full time made working out challenging. The majority of the gyms were closed during the first few months of the pandemic and my daily workout routine at LA Fitness came to a screeching halt. What was a fitness fanatic to do? Retailers such as Wal-Mart, Big 5 and Amazon were selling free weights such as dumbbells and EZ curl bars at egregious prices. 20 lb dumbbells' were selling for $100 at some retail locations. According to the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, “We have control over our minds, not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength.” Individuals do not control what happens to us, but we do control our response. We are only guaranteed today and must strive to be the best version of ourselves in the puzzle of life. Avoid the path of least resistance, stay positive, assist those that are less fortunate.
